Lesson Plan Supplemental Materials

I created a  lesson plan geared towards helping children on a preschool level to have a better understanding of a computer and its devices. We explored how we can use them in our everyday life, in the classroom and what they can help us accomplish. Children also explored the components of a computer, develop new vocabulary, create an email, take pictures, make videos, and create computer artwork.
The common core standards addressed during this lesson plan were;
Topic: Initiative and Curiosity;
Ask questions to seek explanations about phenomena of interest.
Seek new and varied experiences and challenges (take risks).
Topic: Planning, Action and Reflection ;
Develop, initiate and carry out simple plans to obtain a goal.
Use prior knowledge and information to assess, inform, and plan for future actions and learning.
Topic: Expression of Ideas and Feelings through the Arts;
Express individuality, life experiences, and what he/she knows and is able to do through a variety of media.
Topic: Persistence;
Carry out tasks, activities, projects or experiences from beginning to end.
Focus on the task at hand even when frustrated or challenged.
Topic: Attention;
Focus on an activity with deliberate concentration despite distractions.

The first supplement I will use is a pre-assesment to help understand what my children already know about a computers and to develop vocabulary for the lesson.

The second supplement I will use is a online coloring book I made for my preschoolers to color in as an activity.

The third supplement is an online multiple choice quiz I will assist my students in taking to determine if they properly understand what a computer can and cannot do.

Growing Up Online

  • This documentary examines the ways in which today's generation makes use of the Internet. It covers creating profiles on MySpace, uploading videos on YouTube and playing online games and etc. The documentary shows the different issues parents and teenagers have with understanding this new craze. It includes the ups of using the internet as well as the downside meaning cyber bullying; "Internet fame"; and sexual predators. This private world kids have created online private worlds that kids are creating online, raising important questions about how the Internet is transforming the experience of adolescence:

    1. A survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that in 2004, 67 percent of parents said the Internet has been a good thing for their children. However, this number decreased to 59 percent in 2006. In 2012, 69% of parents of online teens said they were concerned about how their child’s online activity might affect their future academic or employment opportunities, with some 44% being “very” concerned. Cite some reasons why parental support for their children’s independent internet use is decreasing. Why do you think the number of parents who reported the Internet being a good thing for their children has decreased?
    I think it has decreased due to the recent awareness and information being made available on the dangers and impact the internet may have on our children. These dangers include but are not limited to sexual predators, cyber bullying, sexting, peer influence, lack of social abilities, and some even argue mental illnesses.

    2. More teachers are using tools to try to detect cheating or deter students’ inclination to cheat. In the program, we see the use of plagiarism-detection tools like Turnitin.com and writing assignments completed during class time to make sure students do their own work and generate their own ideas.How can we as educators stop students from using material they found online as their own work? Should that be considered cheating, in your opinion?

    I honestly don't think it is cheating per se because many things can be found online that have already be discussed and others share their opinion and this opinion may be the exact feelings you have towards an issue. However I do think that copying a persons idea is wrong but molding it to fit your own ideas is fine and should be accepted.
    3. One student claims he "never reads books" but relies on summaries and annotated notes he finds on Web sites. He confesses that he feels guilty about this, stating, "I feel like I kind of cheated it."
    In your opinion, should he feel guilty? Why or why not?

    No I don't think so necessarily because online is a greater search tool and it gives you many more possibilities than sitting down and having to read multiple books to gather the information you need on a subject. I think more things should be accessible online and going paperless is one way to help save the future. Unfortunately many websites we get our information from are not considered accredited sites.

    4. Before the Internet, in order to be seen by the world, you had to be portrayed in some form of mass media, and you had to be famous in some respect -- in the news, in politics or as a celebrity. Now anyone can be seen online by anyone else in the world. Some people have become famous for videos or photos they’ve posted (such as Autumn Edows).
    In your opinion, should people like Edows, or others who become “ famous” through their online presence, be considered “celebrities?”
    Has the ability to create an online persona, and receive worldwide attention for it, affected our cultural values?
    I think we are living in the age of reality t.v. I think true talent isn't what it used to be considered and doesn't have to live up to the same criteria. I don't necessarily feel these changes are bad, I think they actually give common people a shot at having 60 seconds of fame. The only issue I have is the border or what's appropriate and inappropriate is easily crossed online because a person only has to go through themselves to upload a video and share it with the world. Whereas with real movies they go through many levels of examination before being determined ok to show to the world or not. And videos online do not have viewers discretion. I personally feel like youtube needs to be censored better because many times I see "related" videos pop up when my child is watching her lullabye playlist, and these popups aren't age appropriate. Or you will see ads that aren't appropriate on any channel or website. Many times they have nothing to do with the product being viewed, but are instead put there because of the high traffic the product is pulling.

    5. Shows like "To Catch a Predator" on Dateline NBC (http://www.nbcnews.com/id/10912603/) contribute to parental anxiety about online media. It is obvious that certain elements of programs like “To Catch a Predator,” and even this documentary, will likely increase parents’ fears.
    Cite one current event from the past year where a young person has been affected (positively or negatively) by being active online. (find a link to a news story, describe it in your answer to this question, and provide the link as well).

    Teen girl belived to be kidnapped found dead after meeting up with a facebook friend for the first time. Below is the story of Nichole Cable a victim to an online friendship gone bad.

    6. Teasing, lying, gossiping, threatening, spreading rumors or harassing online (and offline)can severely affect people’s self-concept and self-esteem and have an impact on their emotional state. In the program, we see one girl who describes flirting with boys and then revealing she was just kidding. She explains: "You wouldn’t do that to someone’s face, but online is completely different. ... No one can do anything. You’re at your house, they’r e at their house."
    In her quote, this teen is describing Suler’s disinhibition effects. Which one do you think it is, and why?

    This is an example of Suler's dissociative anonymity. A person feels like the person doesn't know them so they can treat them in a way they most likely wouldnt do in real life online.
    7. At the end of the program, Greg decides it’s time for him to "disconnect" by going to the Coast Guard Academy, where he will spend seven weeks without cell phones or the Internet.

    Have you ever thought about "disconnecting" from it all?
    Do you think it would be easy or difficult for you personally?
    What would you enjoy or dislike about disconnecting?

    I wouldn't be able to disconnect because my life is to wrapped around the internet. From many online support groups I have joined and blogs I host I do not see myself being able to disconnect. The reason being is because I am so disconnected in real life being as though I moved to another state to be with my husband and left all of my family and friends behind and now since me and him are separated I don't have the same social life I used to have and the same real life interactions and connections I am used to having. Therefore I rely on the online community to feel socially aware and connected. Facebook is the number 1 way I talk with all friends and family.

National and State Technology Standards

Dayona Evans
Ed tech
Professor Frick
1. As you read the Introduction to the National Education Technology Plan, what did you determine to be the purpose of the National Education Technology Plan? How does it affect teachers and students, people like you and me? (feel free to be critical if you like).
The National Education Plan is a plan designed to get Americans back to focusing on the importance of education and the benefits of an educated society.  The plan is to get teachers and other adults in student’s life more engaged in supporting learning systems that work properly for each student, also by offering a variety of learning tools and other relevant tools to help students be more successful thinkers. This would affect the way teachers have been taught to teach and the way sttudents have been thought to learn. This new method is aimed to fulfill the student more intellectually, mentally, and meaningfully by keeping them engaged in their education.

2. As you read the Introduction to the National Education Technology Plan (NETP), what were the main assumptions under which the plan was developed?  (you may copy and paste the main assumptions, and then answer the question below in your own words).
What are some concerns administrators, educators, or even students might have with these assumptions?
The plan is based on the following assumptions:
“Many of the failings of our education system stem from our failure to engage the hearts and minds of students.
What students need to learn and what we know about how they learn have changed, and therefore the learning experiences we provide should change.
How we assess learning focuses too much on what has been learned after the fact and not enough on improving learning in the moment.
We miss a huge opportunity to improve our entire education system when we gather student-learning data in silos and fail to integrate the information and make it broadly available to decision-makers at all levels of our education system—individual educators, schools, districts, states, and the federal government.
Learning depends on effective teaching, and we need to focus on extended teams of connected educators with different roles who collaborate within schools and across time and distance and who use technology resources and tools to augment human talent.
Effective teaching is an outcome of preparing and continually training teachers and leaders to guide the type of learning we want in our schools.
Making engaging learning experiences and resources available to all learners anytime and anywhere requires state-of-the-art infrastructure, which includes technology, people, and processes that ensure continuous access.
Education can learn much from such industries as business and entertainment about leveraging technology to continuously improve learning outcomes while increasing the productivity of our education system at all levels.
Just as in health, energy, and defense, the federal government has an important role to play in funding and coordinating some of the R&D challenges associated with leveraging technology to ensure the maximum opportunity to learn.”
The issues people may have with this new system is the fact that the way we teach, the traditional way even though it has been proved to be failing in our societies many people students and teachers just aren’t open to such a big change and we need to do this on a gradual level in order to prevent chaos.
3. As you read the Executive Summary, the NETP presents a model of learning powered by technology, with goals and recommendations in five essential areas. ( You may copy and paste the areas directly from the document and then answer the question below in your own words).
What are the “21st century competencies” - see the section titled “what and how people need to learn”- listed in the summary? How will technology support the growth of these competencies?
  • “Transferring existing and emerging technology innovations from sectors such as business, consumer, and entertainment into education.
  • Transferring appropriate developments from the Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration to the public education sector.
  • Supporting and sustaining the education R&D that is currently happening throughout the National Science Foundation by designing a commercialization strategy.
  • Creating a new organization (the National Center for Research in Advanced Information and Digital Technologies) with the mission of serving the public good through R&D at the intersection of learning sciences, technology, and education.
  • Providing competitive grants for scaling up innovative and evidence-based practices through the Department of Education's Investing in Innovation Fund.”
21st-century competencies are such expertise as critical thinking, complex problem solving, collaboration, and multimedia communication should be woven into all content areas.  Technology will support the growth of these competencies by providing the proper tools in order to learn these methods easily. Learning to use technology for education and learning is the tool we need most in the 21st-centuray because we are in a new world and technology is its map.
4. As you read The State of Ohio's Educational Technology Plan's "purpose and mission" (page 6), how do you believe it aligns with the National Education Technology Plan? In which respects are the two plans perhaps not aligned?  Why?
I think they both align in the way of focusing and acknowledging that technology is the face of the future of education and making sure that students and teachers will have access to the latest most advanced technology to be used in the classroom to encourage learning. The plans differ in the fact that Ohio’s specific plan focuses more on students while in school whereas the National plan focuses on education in technology for life and as a tool to be used through-out life in all aspects.
5. As you read Ohio’n w s State Educational Technology Plan outlined on page 8, how do you believe this outline aligns with the "model of learning powered by technology, with goals and recommendations in five essential areas" proposed by the National Education Technology Plan?  In which areas are the two plans perhaps not aligned?  Why?
They both align in the way that they both focus on ways to overcome technology education barriers. They differ in the fact that the Ohio’s plan focuses on schools only whereas the National plan focuses on other aspects of institutions in our everyday life such as places of business also having the most advanced technology tools.
6. As you read Ohio’s State Educational Technology Plan's "measurements of success" (page 16), what barriers do you see to fulfilling this plan? Provide four reasons why it may not be possible to reach these "measurements of success" in the state of Ohio.
The main barriers I see are;
1.  Getting institutions to get the materials and the  instructors who are educated in the educational technology field to teach the material to the students.
2. I think students and parents may be less inclined to learn classwork online and not in a traditional school, because school is a place children go to be social with their peers and it would be more difficult to achieve this with online classes
3. I think the methods used to grade online work versus traditional classwork may play a role in why online teaching and learning will be less effective. Breaks have to be given to an extent when a person is learning online because not being there to have that one on one direction may lead to a misunderstanding in course work and completion.

4.  I think getting advance technology tools in the class may be a challenge due to many issues. The poorer school districts may not get the most advanced technology their students need in order to learn successfully through education or the supplies may be limited. Also technical tools break easily and it may be discouraged from being used because they are pricey to maintain.

ORC Lesson Plan

  This lesson is designed for children ages 5, kindergarten level.  This activity is good for moving around and getting physically active. This activity also helps children learn the different ways animals move. Children will be mimicking animal motions.

  Children are expected to learn life science. Students will gain an understanding of Life Science through the study of changes in organisms over time and the nature of living things.  Children will have the chance to ask questions and will be given reasons to why some of these changes take place and why they are necessary. Children will learn how an animal is born, if it is by an egg or live birth and which stages the animal transforms to developmentally before being considered an adult animal. They will mimic the animal in each stage and compare the animal life stages to their own and other members of their family.

 I would have the children pick an item from a box and tell me if the item was living or non living. Once they have told me if it is living or nonliving  I will have them act out the item they picked. If it was a car they would move around like a car and make noises a car made, if it was an animal they would move like that animal and make movements that animal makes. The only problem I think I would have if making sure the children don't hurt themselves or one another when moving around. The most challenging part in an active lesson like this is keeping the kids focused.

Pinterest in the Classroom

1.What did you learn from the PINTEREST activity?
I learned how to set up my classroom better for special education students.

2.How do you believe you will utilize PINTEREST as a teacher?
I will use it to find class activities and decor.

3.What are the strengths of PINTEREST?
Pinterest is good because it provides visuals for the activities we wish to complete. Sometimes we don't know the name of what we want but seeing a picture makes it easier to get details on an activity.

4.What are some of the challenges of PINTEREST?
I don't like how it is hard to have communication with other people, that one on one user feedback isn't provided like other social sites.

5.What comments, questions, thoughts, opinions, and/or feedback do you have about PINTEREST?
I really liked this and didn't think that I would as much, I think It's great for finding ideas for class decor and activities.

Khan/Koller Review

-When you visited the site, was it something you envisioned using yourself?
Yes I have used this site many times to help me gain a better understanding or certain math concepts.

- Is it something you could imagine encouraging your students to use?
I would encourage my students to use this site because they main understand the methods there better than my own methods when it comes to understanding a subject.

-After perusing some of the videos on the site, did you think they were easy to follow and learn from?
Very easy to follow the color coding really helped.

-Do you believe that Salman Khan is right when he says that in the future, we will rely more on "credentialing" through the use of online courses? Do you think this style of education makes learning more accessible for more students? If so, why? If not, Why?
Yes I think online learning is best because students can learn and still have a personal life. Many people don't go to college because they can't see themselves learning in a university type atmosphere or they feel like they wont fit in with that crowd. The online learning is best for busy learners with families and jobs.

-When you explore the coursera course offerings, what course looks most interesting to you?

Conditions of War and Peace with Professor,Kiichi Fujiwara

-Does Columbus State accept Coursera transfer credits?

no

-Do Coursera courses appear to be more challenging or more interesting thank those you've experienced before? If yes, why? If not, why? Either way, could your opinion have something to do with WHO is teaching the Coursera courses?
No it seems the same as any other college level class, the only challenges would be they shorter weeks to get the work completed.

- Do you think that MOOCs (massive open online courses) are the "wave of the future"? How do you think MOOCs might change the way a student like you would receive their education?

A student could learn anywhere they wouldn't be confined to one institute.

Ohio DL Schools

I would choose Ohio Virtual Academy I like how they posted a lot of information on the results of students who graduated from their programs and how those students enrolled in College soon after. I liked how they hosted many community events and how their students were acknowledged for distinguished learning and recognized by the national honors society. I like how they had a very easy FAQ section and how they went into details about myths of virtual schooling, to help remedy any doubts a parent might have.

I would not choose Virtual Community  School  of Ohio because their website did not provide enough information to make me feel like this school would be successful for my children to attend.  It was also inappropriate for me because it had a lot of options, too many options to where I felt like a child's education needs may be overlooked. It had options for adults to get a high school diploma and etc, and it seemed like it caused more money then the other programs which were free for everything and had way more resources.

Assistive Technology for students with visual impairments

I choose to write about learning disabilities of students who are blind or visually impaired and how their education is effected by this disability. A student who has a visual disability cannot depend on their sense of sight for learning and instead have to use their other senses to acquire knowledge. This is difficult for many because sight is the main way children learn and gain experience of the world around them. Children who are blind tend to be afraid of the world around them and also have social issues due to the fact that they haven’t learned to trust the unknown and they are normally completely dependent on people with sight to tell them how the world works and what they can or cannot do.

One way AT’s can help students with visual issues is by providing programs that convert text to audio. Audio books help blind students understand and comprehend course work. They are the voice/audio versions of text and other school related works. Having an audio version of school works makes it a lot easier to understand the subject being taught and do a lesson along with the rest of the class. This is a great tool because a student can just put in headphones and use audio text in a class of their peers and learn exactly what the peers are learning.

I think this is awesome and I think the peers would be jealous of the students who get to listen to books and text and don’t have to sit and read them. If a child has a slight visual issue large print books may be hard to come across but a screen magnifier can easily be downloaded onto the students’ personal and school computer in order to complete their work.  Below is a link to a website that describes these AT options in greater detail.

I think these AT’s should be accessible in all classrooms because they cannot only help students with learning disabilities and who are visually impaired but they can also help the entire student body learn easier. Reading a book is a lot harder for some children but sitting down and relaxing while having the book read to them is a lot more effective for some in processing information. I think AT is a great way to open the door to endless possibilities in future classroom learning and I believe it shouldn’t be limited to children with disabilities but made accessible to every child if it has a chance to help them be a more successful student.

Pic monkey

It was really fun experiencing all of the features on pic monkey, I liked all the effects and collages. I was able to turn my picture into a masterpiece and it was fun tweaking around until I found the right combo to make my pic kinda silly but still recognizable. I am really looking forward to using this site to make collages and other picture art.

My Go Animate Video

Summer Bummer by dayona evans on GoAnimate

I choose to make my video about a student feeling anxiety in school on the first day back after a dreadful summer of summer classes after not doing so well in the previous school year. The reason I choose this scenario is because I know a lot of students when they don't do well in school they dread coming. In this video my goal was to get the student excited about learning and showing her that I was going to be a supportive teacher and help her plan for success. I think it's good for teachers to keep kids excited about school, especially since they have to go to the place for most of their childhood.

My Prezi

Prezi was really amazing I am so happy to have come across this tool for teaching. In my prezi below I went over my reasons for wanting to teach in the early childhood, elementary level stage. I discussed the goals of early education as well as some of its challenges. I also explained how I planned to overcome these challenges. Ideally I'd like to teach kindergarten however my ultimate goal is opening up my own institute for early childhood education. Prezi was a little hard to work with but overall I am happy with my prezi and I plan on in the future perfecting this tool.

“Three Great Teacher Blogs”

http://www.teachforamerica.org/blog
http://teachertomsblog.blogspot.com/
http://www.prekinders.com/blog/

Welcome to my Blog!

 Hi my name is Dayona Evans, My students call me Ms.DEE! I am currently enrolled at Columbus State Community College, seeking a degree in their Early Childhood Development and Education program. I always enjoyed helping others learn, and learning myself. I think learning is fundamental and it opens the door to huge opportunities. Being educated plays a huge role in ones life and it starts at an early stage. I believe children have to learn to love education and we as educators must provide education to them in a fun and creative way.

My goals in this field is to convey to parents how important quality early childhood education and experiences are. Many children are unsuccessful in life because they were denied a good start. I believe children are natural learners, filled with potential. From the very start they are accomplishing huge things, they learn to suckle, crawl, walk, talk all on their own, educators are just there to give them the direction and boost they need to succeed.

My motto is, " Education, all the cool kids are doing it" -Ms. DEE
